Our Words Can Rise or Ruin….

Parents often remind kids that, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.

That’s a great little saying because it rhymes and comes off as conveying profundity – but it’s a lie.

Name calling and hurtful words can do considerable damage.

While words may not actually break a bone, they most certainly can crush a heart, end a relationship or start a war.

Words have world-changing power.

Unfortunately, people take the power and impact of their words for granted.

They shouldn’t.

Consider the world today if we didn’t have the following “words”

  • The Declaration of Independence
  • The Ten Commandments
  • The American Constitution
  • Martin Luther’s 95 Theses
  • Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech
  • The Gettysburg Address
  • The German Instrument of Surrender for World War II
As well as millions of documents containing billions of words.
The fact is that words can change the world globally and locally. Still don’t believe me? Check out this short, yet powerful video about the power of words.

Question: What words will you use to change the world (or at least your part of it) for the better?

Tor, great post. I do love that video.

Our kids can’t make it through school without being called some name or other these days. If we try to tell them that old saying, they’ll lose all respect for us. They know there are kids out there killing themselves over the words people say. Does that suggest words will never hurt?

I agree, words have a huge impact on our psyche.

Great point Nicole – the preferred weapon of young bullies and intimidators tends to be words. Thanks for adding to the discussion!
