Real Men Watch Downton Abbey

Just so we’re clear, I’m a bit of a manly man – consider the following proof points:

  • I started shaving in pre-school and my voice changed in kindergarten.
  • When I sweat, it’s 70% pure testosterone, 10% 30W motor oil and 15% bacon grease.
  • My body is so covered with hair that evolutionists continually try to recruit me as a missing link.
  • Most guys have one Y chromosome from their dad, I’ve got seven.

I’m not bragging, I’m just making a point that I’m over indexed when it comes to masculinity.

So, it’s a bit awkward for me to admit that the television show that I’m most looking forward to this fall TV season has no explosions, gun play, bank heists, swimsuit models, slapstick or flatus jokes.

The program I’m most excited about is PBS’ Downton Abbey.

I know it’s not Ice Road Truckers or Swamp Loggers, but before you revoke my man card, I challenge you to watch season one of the series – season two was just as good.

While I’ve written a couple of parody posts about this program before, it’s only because I love it and season three is scheduled to start January 6, 2013. Here’s a trailer for that upcoming installment.

For some reason this program has filled me with such anticipation that I’m as giddy as a school girl frolicking through a field of petit fores and Jelly Belly jelly beans.

Ok, I may have officially gone too far with that last sentence…

Question: Is there a TV program or new series that you’re looking forward to?

So Manly Man (lol) loved your self- description! When does the new series start?

  • Roy A. Ackerman, PhD, EA

I’ll have to remember to not call when that show is on… oh, wait, I don’t have a clue, nor do I anticipate garnering such knowledge… :-)

Tor you crack me up. I’m not sure about Downtown Abbey, but another quality program I’ve enjoyed from the BBC is Sherlock. Check it out on iTunes. Legit.

Also, I’m a big fan of ABC’s Castle. The crime storyline isn’t all that original (since CSI takes the cake on that), but the role of Castle and the interaction of the characters keeps me coming back for more.

    And NCIS.

Tor, I am really excited about Doctor Who being back in about 2 weeks. I think watching it makes me seem smarter than I am. I think that’s the way it is with British TV. It sounds smarter.

This made me laugh. I’m not much on sweeping period dramas, so I’ve never actually seen the show, though I hear good things from many people–including some other manly men, so you are not alone! But I can certainly relate to the idea of highly anticipating a much-loved program to return, so I’ll hope S3 is as entertaining for you as the first two.

Wow, Tor, you have really given us some keen insight into just how manly you are. I can only assume that these are the words that your wife initially used to get you to watch the show. I haven’t yet watched, but due to your encouragement here I think I’ll give it a try. The shows I’m looking forward to are The Amazing Race (it helps me pretend to travel around the world) and The Big Bang Theory. The latter is especially funny if you are married to an engineer like I am.

Nice! What a man you are. Tor, I’m most looking forward to Downton Abbey, too. The acting is superb and the story compelling. Of course I can always say I’m just watching to look for blog material and point to you!
