Our Pregnancy Update – Week 27

Click for Larger Image of Baby at 27 Weeks - via Babycenter.com

The arrival of our new baby boy is less than 13 weeks away and we’re thrilled as the due day of June 19th draws closer.

Junior has been so active of late that his intra-uteral gymnastics have woken my wife up in the middle of the night.

We expect to see full-fledged “Alien” abdominal movements within the next week – how cool is that!

We’ve cleared our the guest room and have set up the crib – it’s one of those heavy, oak jobs where you lower the mattress as the baby grows and converts into a toddler bed.

I had forgotten what a pain in the gluts it was to re-assemble that thing.

The next step is painting the new nursery and such – when it’s done we’ll force those pictures on you.

Here’s the latest developmental update about Junior from the good folks at  BabyCenter.com – here’s the latest:

This week, your baby weighs almost 2 pounds and is about 14 1/2 inches long with his legs extended. He’s sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing his eyes, and perhaps even sucking his fingers.

With more brain tissue developing, your baby’s brain is very active now. While his lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning — with a lot of medical help — if he were to be born now.

Chalk up any tiny rhythmic movements you may be feeling to a case of baby hiccups, which may be common from now on. Each episode usually lasts only a few moments, and they don’t bother her, so just relax and enjoy the tickle.

BabyCenter also uses various fruits and vegetables to estimate our son’s growth – here’s the edible montage during the past several weeks:

Week 27 – A head of cauliflower (NOTE: they’ve switched from measuring length to weight – the baby is now about 2 lbs.)
Week 26 – English hothouse cucumber (what the heck kind of veggie is that???)
Week 25 – Rutabaga
Week 24 – Ear of corn
Week 23 – Mango
Week 22 – Spaghetti Squash
Week 21 – Carrot
Week 20 – Banana
Week 19 – Heirloom Tomato
Week 18 – Bell Pepper
Week 17 – Turnip
Week 16 – Avocado
Week 15 – Apple
Week 14 – Lemon
Week 13 – Medium Shrimp
Week 12 – Lime
Week 11 – Fig
Week 10 – Kumqut
Week 9 – Grape

We’ve decided to proceed with banking umbilical cord blood for the baby and will keep you updated on that process – it’s a fascinating technology.

Question: It’s been seven years since we had a baby, what’s the best baby tip you can share?

We banked our last child’s cord blood. He’s the fourth, and we thought it wise to do that for the benefit of all his siblings as well. If you want a referral to CBR–Cord Blood Registry–let me know. There are other companies that are just as good, too.

We’d love a referral – and thanks for the info, we’re neophytes to this cord blood stuff. I’d like to get more details about the benefits to siblings, that was a benefit I was not aware of…any sites you’d suggest??? Thanks again!

No help offered. I’m just following along and enjoying the updates! Are we sharing names yet?

    • http://www.thedailyretort.com/ TorConstantino

I was considering Gino, Nino, Dino, Reno or Vino (any of which flow nicely with Constantino ;-) but we have decided on Salvatore James Constantino. Those are the first names of both my wife’s and my fathers.

3 cubed… cauliflower… with 13 to go…At this rate, I’ll have to shop at that high-falutin’ market (Whole Foods) to be able to visualize all these vegetable forms you are employing.

Especially if they start throwing exotic fruits at us such as Mangosteen or Rambutan ;-)

    Congrats!

    How awesome, Tor!

I’m waiting for the week 39 update:

Your baby now weighs as much as a good sized watermelon, and we’re quite sure you’re ready for these updates to cease, and for the this journey to be over.

Congratulations to you & the Constantino family!

PS: here’s a little “pregnancy” story from my neck of the woods: http://randomlychad.com/2012/03/ketchup-mayo-youre-incondiment-or-5-little-words-i-never-thought-id-hear-again.html
