Olympic Gold Medal…in Parenting

Opening ceremonies for the  2012 Summer Olympic Games will be held on the last Friday in July.

For each athlete who competes this year,  years of sacrifice, dedication, commitment and training will culminate as they represent their respective country in the global event.

An often overlooked element of the athletes is their parents. Almost every Olympic athlete credits their parents for helping them achieve their aspirations, for helping them persevere and overcome adversity.

Perhaps the greatest example of “Olympic Parenting” I’ve ever seen involved British 400 meter runner Derek Redmond and his father (Jim) from the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.

I’ve seen this powerful video dozens of times and it still chokes me up.

I don’t know the names of any athlete who won a medal in this particular event, but I’ll always remember the names associated with this supreme example of “Olympic Parenting.”

Question: Have you ever witnessed an example of “Olympic Parenting”?

    *sniff* I need a tissue.

Reminds me of Cool Runnings or the end of Cars. Except neither of those had parents involved, so it’s not quite the same.

No doubt – I love the ending of Cars. Apparently my sentimentality knows no bounds!
