I came across a fascinating story regarding McMaster University in Ontario Canada. The basic gist of the article is that more than 180 students were divided into groups and assigned the task of trying to identify the molecular makeup of four sins specifically: lust, gluttony, wrath and sloth (laziness). Click here for the full story. http://dailynews.mcmaster.ca/story.cfm?id=7312 The student groups then sought a hypothetical solution using biology/chemistry to try and remedy those sins. A Lot to Worry About Along Side A Lot of Nonsense…
They Fight - We Lose It seems that the looming legislative logjam in our nation’s capitol regarding a new budget may very well shut down the federal government – with the potential to cascade down to the state level and beyond. Don’t be fooled. The main obstacles to an agreement are political – not substantive. The story behind the story is simply a case of which party can do the most damage to the other party heading into the 2012 presidential and … [Read more...]
Darwin’s Dirty Little Secret….
Most individuals recognize Charles Darwin as the Father of Evolution, and his book The Origin of Species (1859) with its concept of natural selection among animals via “survival of the fittest,” as the closest thing to a messiah and belief system that science willing embraces as its gospel. Since elementary school, we’ve all been indoctrinated to evolution’s underlying premise that there are finite resources that all life forms are competing to obtain. If an individual within a given … [Read more...]

A Triumph For Bad Science
Here's an interesting - yet disturbing - story from The Daily Telegraph, a UK-based newspaer of a researcher who fudged data results and forged the names of study co-authors on as many as 90 peer-reviewed publications. This fraudulent researcher also happened to be one of the world's premier anaesthetists, which enabled him to perpetuate these scientific shenanigans for years. While the fraud was ultimately found out nearly a decade later, it's striking that such bad science could … [Read more...]
Post-Super Bowl Weigh-in….
My Team (sigh) I'm not gonna lie to you, I planned on being in the "+" column at weekly WeightWatchers weigh-in this week for three reasons: 1. Like most red-blooded American males, I didn't skimp on the Super Bowl snacking; 2. My team lost the big game, which sent me into a supplemental eating regimine; 3. I realized the NFL season was over and that labor unrest amongst its players might prevent a 2011 season altogether - resulting in augmented supplemental eating. Needless … [Read more...]
Incredible pix and video of a 25-week preemie…
I became aware of this family through a colleague at work. Below is a video montage with snippets of their incredible home video of a preemie who was born at a gestational age of 25 weeks - that's more than 15 weeks early compared to a full-term child. This baby weighed 12 ozs. when she was born and she is thriving today. This should help refocus our attention on the value of life and cause us to hug our own children a little tighter tonight before bed. I promise it'll be the best six … [Read more...]
The Meaning of “Life”…
You’d think it’d be easy defining “life” - by that I mean the actual processes of living. Think about it, as living beings, each of us is intimately acquainted with what it means to be alive and exhibits the traits or processes of living entities. The concept of life seems so obvious. But if you think back to your freshman biology the differences between living and non-living entities were determined by the various life functions that were exhibited. Here’s a short list … [Read more...]
