Fighting the Good Fight – Against Myself

I recently shared about a sobering emergency room visit involving a cardiac issue I had. As a result of that visit, I've made some lifestyle changes  regarding how I eat and how I exercise to ensure healthier outcomes going forward. I've been on WeightWatchers for three weeks now and went to weigh-in this morning. As of today I've lost another -2.6 lbs for a total loss of -9.2 lbs. So far so good. Additionally, I've committed to exercising everyday. To help me in that regard, I … [Read more...]

My Emergency Room Confession

I had no intention of sharing this recent episode in my family's life, but it's becoming such a large part - it's difficult to avoid. For starters, I've got an irregular heart beat which means my cardiac ticker tends to tock when it should tick. It's not been an issue - until recently. On Wednesday, August 29th at 6:45pm I had to call 911 to have an ambulance take me to the hospital for severe chest pain. They ran a battery of tests and kept me overnight due to my family history of … [Read more...]

Facing my fear and failure (again)…

My two biggest fears in life are the fear of failure and of disappointing people - I think many people can relate to those. But both of those fears combined into a queasy ache in my stomach yesterday as I walked into the local WeightWatchers office where I lost 35 lbs. - TWICE over the past three years. Needless to say, I re-gained most of that lost weight because I got lazy with the program - thinking I had "arrived" - not needing the support of others or the program itself anymore, … [Read more...]

A 5K With My Kid….

This past Sunday I had the pleasure, delight and honor of running a 5K (3.1 miles) race with my daughter. It was her third and the second that we've both run together. Check out the pictures of her accomplishment! For the past few months, our oldest has been participating in the Girls on the Run (GOTR) program at her school, which means she and a dozen other girls spend an hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays doing various training runs and learning other life lessons. GOTR is a fabulous … [Read more...]

3 Keys to Beating My Addiction: Caffeine

Last week I decided that I wanted to stop drinking caffeinated coffee and diet soda with caffeine as well. I realize that caffeine in moderate amounts actually has been proven to have healthful benefits for a variety of nasty disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and some types of cancer, but I still needed to stop. The problem was, that I couldn't drink the stuff in moderation. Each day, I would practically polish off a pot of coffee by myself before heading to work during my morning … [Read more...]

Yet Another Reason I Hate Funerals….

Nondescript Casket My immediate family spent the majority of last week at myin-laws home inNew Yorkbecause my wife’s grandmother passed away. While I think it’s extremely important to celebrate thememory of the deceased; support and sympathize with the survivors and offer adegree of closure for the living via the various death-induced services andrituals – I hate funerals. As a former news reporter, I had to attend dozens as anuninvited gawker amidst grieving … [Read more...]

Are Witchcraft and Karate Similar???

Check out OUR family's karate photos below!!! Ever since I can remember, I’ve wanted to earn a black belt in some kind of martial art. I think it all stems back to the early 1970’s when Kung Fu legend Bruce Lee was still alive, and I saw a TV commercial for his movie titled “Enter the Dragon.” I remember being 4 or 5 years old begging my parents to take me to see the movie, which they refused to do. It wasn’t that they necessarily were opposed to the violence but they were … [Read more...]

Our 9-Year Old Ran Her 1st Official 5K!!!

A pre-race sisterly hug! My wife and I try to model healthy and positive behaviors before the ever watchful eyes of our two daughters. Our number one goal is to help they grow up to be individuals who are complete in the following facets of life: mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. For me, from a physical perspective growing up, neither of my parents lived active lifestyles. In fact I don’t recall my mom or dad ever throwing a baseball, football or … [Read more...]
