This year I’m trying to extend the reach of my writing into a variety of new online and offline publications and outlets.
Today, I have an article featured on the Parenting Section of Suite101.
This is kind of a big deal for me, because two years ago Suite101 rejected my application to submit articles to its site stating that my submissions were too personal.
I applaud those writers who have their content readily accepted by the editors at sites such as Suite101 because they summarily kicked my writing out on its keister.
I fully understand that rejection is a big part of the writing process but that doesn’t make dealing with rejection easier. Rejection is still difficult to take because writers strive to pour so much of themselves into each piece – at least that’s the only way I can write.
However, another key to successful writing is perseverance – and this post is proof of that.
So having this article posted on Suite101 means a lot to me. Here’s an excerpt to the

My wife and I have been parents for more than 10 years and we’re expecting our third child in a few months. We’ve made mistakes along the way (as all parents do) – but we’ve learned a lot as well.
Here are five of the toughest lessons that I believe loving parents have to come to grips with while raising their kids:
The Hardest Lesson
1. ’Doing Nothing When You Are Able’ - As a parent, it’s easy for us to do long division and ride a bike; however we can’t do math homework or ride bikes on behalf of our kids. Metaphorically speaking, we can’t let them have training wheels for ever, which means they will fall down and fail at times.
There is sometimes resultant pain and frustration that I could prevent but don’t because the child needs to develop mastery of life skills on their own.
That kind of parental restraint is necessary so they can learn for themselves. This continues to be a difficult, ongoing lesson for me to learn as a parent.
