10 More Troubling Texting Phrases Parents Must Know…

This week our 10 year old daughter began mandatory sex education classes.

I wrote about how my wife and I prepared her for that information in a post titled A Father’s Worst Fear – Part II.

The reality of the information and what she didn’t know forced our hand as parents.

That got me thinking about the information that we as parents don’t know.

The biggest gaps in my knowledge as a parent are texting phrases and instant messaging (IM) shortcuts that teens and preteens are using these days.

Neither of our daughters has a cell phone, but that discuss is likely to occur in the next few years. In preparation for that day I’ve been researching questionable or inappropriate texting terms that others may try to send our girls.

A few months ago I wrote a post about 20 Troubling Texting Phrases Every Parent Must Know.

Since then I’ve continued to cobble together other texting terms and IM phrases to equip parents to effectively protect their kids. Here are the 10 latest that I’ve found which have been confirmed by the resources at NetLingo, again some of these are a bit shocking and are not appropriate for younger readers:

 1. ADR – Address (home)

2. CD9 – (Code 9) – Parents are around

3. GNOC – Get Naked On Camera

4. GYPO – Get Your Pants Off

5. HAK – Hugs And Kisses

6. IWSN – I Want Sex Now

7. J/O – Jerking Off

8. KPC – Keeping Parents Clueless

9. MF2F – Meet Face-to-Face

10. 143 – I Love You (each number represents the number of letters in each word)

Again some of these terms are troubling, yet it’s the responsibility of parents to inform themselves about what their kids are likely to experience.

Question: Are there any other terms you’ve found that are not on this list? Are there other sites that you’ve found with relevant texting information that you’d like to share?

WOW. Eye-opening. I attended a parent orientation last night at the high school my son will be going to in the fall. Administrator after administrator who spoke stressed staying involved and monitoring facebook and texts. I bet they could add to this very interesting list!

Thanks for the tip Carolina – it’s encouraging to know that administrators and guidance counselors are at least aware of the issues.

Yikes! But if your blog is any indication, I’m fairly certain that you’ve equipped her to be a strong independent self-thinker…

If it’s an identified problem/fear, you can also disable texting on most shared plans via online account access. Verizon offers this…

While actual texts are not available via online accounts (due to Federal privacy laws, texts can be subponeoned in certain cases), you can view the numbers texted and the number of texts sent/received to a number. So, if you see one number with a lot of texts, a) ask your kid who the number is (ie friend, boyfriend, etc.) and, b) what they’re texting about…

Great tip Kimber, thanks for sharing it!

Back in the days of pagers (oh, I had my fair share, as did my ex), we use 459 for the first letters of the word. 143 leaves me cold. But, then, again, I’m not a teen…

The texting of these thoughts trouble me. But what troubles me the most is that there is a boy/girl out there that will do some of the things that you mentioned above. We have to talk to our kids and let them know that they are better then that. They are unique, loved, special, one of a kind and nobody else is worth giving all that up for until you meet your future spouse.

This makes me really want my boys to stay little for a long, long time.

oh, Tor, this makes me cringe for the loss of innocence so young! I just read a study of how many kids lie to their parents about their cell phone usage and messages — as you can imagine, the percentages were very high. I hope more parents will monitor their kids’ phones and use this cheat sheet if they need it.
